DECEMBER OF 2018: NEWS FOR THE PRE-HOLIDAY SEASON

A very active first December week for the FGCL

Three games were played last Sunday December 09, 2018.One match was played at the nice facility Little Haiti FC has in Miami.  There the undefeated home team obtained a last-minute victory against the strong SF Elite Boca Predators. The final score of the match was 2-1 in favor of the leaders.

The other two matches were played at the nice Aiello Stadium in Coral Springs.  The first one confronted Boca Raton FC and Himmarshee FC. The final score was 2-0 in favor of Boca Raton. The last match of the day was between PB Spartans and LSC. A replay of last year league finals. Something similar of what happened in the Little Haiti-SFE Boca Predators occurred here: LSC nailed a difficult victory in the last minute of the match. After being down in the score, LSC came back and with a last second goal in a devastating counterattack won the match by a score of 2-1

At last,  Gregg Berhalter becames US MNT coach

"So Gregg Berhalter’s appointment as head coach of the USA mens team has finally been confirmed, to the apparent surprise of nobody but Julien Lopetegui’s agent. It’s brought to an end a search that has managed to appear from the outside as both tediously ponderous and curiously lacking in substance.Berhalter has been the presumptive next head coach for months now, especially when the principal young domestic rival, Jesse Marsch, departed for Leipzig earlier this summer.Yet as the wait for Berhalter to be confirmed drifted through the fall and through the end of the national team’s season in November, what little intrigue has remained about the succession concerned why exactly it was taking so long to confirm the appointment – particularly when it emerged in recent weeks that US general manager Earnie Stewart’s interviewing process had been far from exhaustive. In other circumstances, an apparent shortlist of one would represent an emphatic endorsement, yet the sense of drift around the US Soccer program has added up to a profound sense of anti-climax around the appointment of Berhalter, which is a shame for a talented and cerebral coach who can otherwise make a reasonable case as one of the most promising American coaches of his generation."     from The Guardian

Our opinion, the problem in US Soccer is not with the head coach of the MNTeam, it resides with the failure to create and develop a proper soccer culture that stimulates the formation of good players in sufficient numbers to support the growth of the sport in the our country

River Plate defeated Boca Juniors in the irrational final of the Copa Libertadores 2018

After more than a month of irrational problems, violence and many political issues, the final game of the Copa was played far away from the country of origin. In Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu magnificent stadium, River Plate defeated Boca Juniors in the second final match of the Copa and nailed the tittle for 2018. A deserved win, since River was better in all aspects of the competition including  better coaching. A pearl to demostrate how much in trouble Argentine soccer is in: the stricker for River Plate, who scored his team first goal (the final result of the match was River 3 Boca 1) Lucas Pratto, was a youth player for Boca Jrs who became a free agent and later mature to be a great forward who succeded in other Argentine teams, in Brazil and in the Argentine Men's National team and was finally purchased by River for a large sum of money.

Tata Martino and his incredible Atlanta United obtained the 2018 MLS Championship

"Atlanta United has completed the incredible two-year odyssey from expansion start-up to Major League Soccer champions.
With a 2-0 win over the Portand Timbers in the MLS Cup before a record crowd of 73,019 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta United won its first league championship in just its second season in existence.
Josef Martinez and Franco Escobar provided the goals, Martinez's coming in the first half at 39 minutes with Escobar seemingly sealing the championship with a second at the 54-minute mark.
Atlanta United's title is also the first for the snakebitten sports city since the Atlanta Braves won the 1995 World Series. The Braves' World Series win had been Atlanta's only major professional sports championship until Atlanta United's triumph.
Martinez's goal extended an MLS record for most combined regular-season and postseason goals to 35. In his two seasons with Atlanta, Martinez  —  the 2018 Major League Soccer MVP  — has displayed a goal-scoring prowess not yet seen before in the league, netting 54 goals in 59 regular-season and postseason games" from USA today
